My girlfriends 1TB WD external HDD is playing up, when you plug it in nothing happens, although you can hear it spinning up and the light flashes on it.

I took it out of the case and plugged it into my computer via SATA, and my computer won't even boot when I plug it in.

After some playing around I noticed that when I plug the drive in via USB, although it does nothing when I plug it in, when I unplug it a message pops up saying "this drive needs formatted", although I can;t do this as the drive is unplugged at this point.

Any help in getting this drive going again, or getting the data off it would be much appreciated. Also, the data is not important, mostly just movies and such. but would be nice to get back.

first check if the drive is being seen as "unallocated space" right click my computer>manage>disk management.
almost all WD external drives have an encryption, so if you want the data back the only thing you can do is recovery them in the original enclosure.

on the data recovery try reading the sticky here:http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html
