Hi all,

I just recently (week and half ago) built my first computer and even more recently (4 days ago) bought a evga geforce GTX 260 core 216 from a friend. Things were running fine until after i installed the drivers, then I started getting BSOD's left and right. They are completely random they can be while im playing, right when i click play, when i open up a new tab, try to load a new page (got one trying to load this page), after being idle for 15 mins (left pc on while went to get a bite from fridge -make my own sandwiches- came back BSOD) or even while watching youtube. And the BSOD errors vary as well, Fatal system error, fault in non paged area (most common), memory_management(second most common) and critical driver failure. Its starting to really P*** me off. Right before i came on here to post this my computer went through a spaz attack of BSOD's it crashed initially when I went to start playing skyrim after writing a paper for about 45 minutes. Rebooted got to login, BSOD. Rebooted got to windows loading screen, BSOD (went through this twice). Turned computer off, let sit 15 minutes, turned on booted into safe mode to uninstall graphics drivers and check "Who crashed" and safe mode crashed. Went into system restore, system restore crashed from a fatal error. Turned computer off again let sit, prayed, turned back on in normal mode signed in uninstalled drivers and headed over to the forums.

After looking at whocrashed the logs it read proved to be no help. couldnt determine what was at fault for the crashes only pointed at the possibility of being my drivers.

Ive tried 3 different versions of nvidia drivers: Beta, most recent certified, and older. All crashed at some point

Im hoping the community can help me with this as I have exhausted what little knowledge I had on ideas and fixes.

Here are my pc specs

Your BSOD errors point to bad RAM. Run memtest for 8 to 10 hours. You will need to mount the .iso file to a burned disk and boot off of it.

http://www.memtest.org/

Free program to mount the disk image if you need one.

http://www.imgburn.com/

Ant memtest errors at all mean a problem with your RAM. Even one. If you need more help running the program just ask.

No, most recently when I tried to uninstall the drivers after the crash. I could only unistall 2 out of the 4 pack nvidia driver install. I was able to unistall 3d driver and usb driver

EDIT: 3 out of 4 uninstalled the other download was for physX, its all that remains

My first thought was a PSU issue as well. Barring a bad GPU (are you sure this is a friend?), its the part most likely to start failing with a new, more demanding GPU.

Use this calculator to figure out your needed wattage: http://support.asus.com/powersupply.aspx

There are others, but that one is a nice blend of simple and detail rich.

Then shop around. Antec, Corsair, Seasonic, and Silverstone are all reliable brands. Other brands might be just as dependable, or they might sell you a 200 Watt PSU made on cardboard instead of circuit boards but put 800 Watts and "super premium extreme power!" on the label. But those four are all good and dependable.

If you want to rule out RAM first, though, it might be quicker to remove a stick at a time to see if the instability goes away.

^ This is very likely the problem. Onus likes Coolermaster power supplies about as much as I do :vomi: ( new smily list rocks! ) .

Stick with Corsair, Seasonic, PC Power and Cooling, XFX, Silverstone, Enermax, OCZ, Antec and the higher efficiency Rosewill units for quality. 500 watts is recommended for a GTX 260.

Well. Turns out its not my psu :ouch: was running my computer (no gpu drivers installed, gpu not plugged in) writing my paper again when i decided to play some music. Bad idea computer froze but didnt crash had to reboot. thats when it crashed twice before I got to the log in screen. Had to turn computer off, wait, and then started up. So yea guess its my RAM which sucks, because that's the one item I don't have the original package for.....:pfff:

So now i guess i find out which one it is... but will windows 7 run on just 2 gb ram? it might go caputz all on its own. One things for sure, when i get my refund im buying 8gb

Run memtest to be sure.

Windows 7 will run with 2GB of RAM but browsing the internet is about all it will do well. And don't open too many tabs at once.
