I believe my CPU is running at 56 degrees C

I nudged the heat sink the other day and since then the computer has been "not responding" programs and running sluggish even when opening simple things like "my computer"

Should i reset it with some fresh thermal compound, will this fix the issue.

Its an old build with recent-ish CPU PSU and GPU.

Phenom II quad (not overclocked)
6gb ocz ram
asus mobo
700W PSU
ATI GPU
and an ancient 150gb veloci-raptor X HDD

not looking for in depth answer nor can i be bothered to post a mass of information and reports. i just have a hunch that this is causing the CPU to overheat and slooooooow down.

Thanks

Solution
yeah if your tweaked the heat sink you could have introduced an air bubble between your cpu and heatsink which would over heat your cpu where the bubble is. try a re-seat with fresh thermal compound as you mentioned.
