Hey, I have a Buffalo CE640U2 EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE, that has stopped working. it just makes a clicking noise like the head is moving back and forth.

I was hoping i could swap the disk to a hardrive that is working and recover my data.

Is this possible?

I already have a WD6400AAKS internal hard drive, so i tried plugging the WD into the power supply pcb of the BUFFALO, The drive spins up but the computer does nothing, Do i need some drivers or something?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.s. does anyone know what part number the internal drive of the CE640U2 is as i think this would make thing easier if i could just buy another one of them and they don't make the whole external HD anymore.

Yes I stupidly threw the cover in the bin when i disassembled it.

Recovering data is very hard ... i tried it myself but it didn't work.

Someone here recommended me to put the hard drive in a couple of newspapers sheets and to put it in the frozer (a lot of sheets). Leave it there for like 6 hours and get it out.

But then, don't plug it in right now ... Wait for about an hour to let everything unfreeze and then try to recover your stuff.

If it doesn't work, then, too bad for you, anyway there's no other way to do it (unless your are a magician or a witch).

Even though its connected as an external hard drive, so to speak (connected with a usb cable)?

I followed those directions but it only shows up drives C and D.

Thanks everyone for the help so far.
