Oh, since you posted in Windows XP I am going to assume that it is what you are trying to install. I therefore have to ask the question, is your SATA set to AHCI mode in your BIOS settings? If so, please set it back to ATA/IDE/Legacy mode (whichever one your motherboard offers). Windows XP discs don't come with AHCI drivers unless its an OEM disc that came with a retail machine.

Where does it freeze? Before or after you select your drive and partition or format it?

Run memtest. You can get the downloadable ISO direct from Microsoft.com. First thing I do when building a PC. Many times the ram and board are not 100% compatible, or the default ram settings are not perfect.

Sata controller. Newer boards have newer controllers that an older windows disc will not have drivers for. See if the MOBO manufacturer has a sata driver. Many times you need to download it to a usb stick from another computer before you begin the install.

The motherboard is MSI G41-P33 Combo with 8GB of memory (not at home and can't remember memory type) a 250 GB WD SATA hard drive and I have tried 3 different DVD RW drives. I have no other hardware connected except as mentioned in original message
