I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a sound card which will work with these speakers. I've had them for years and i'm loathe to throw them out if I could find a relatively inexpensive digital sound card to drive them. I already tried a startech 7.1 pci digital surround sound without success

i would have assumed any sound card with a SPDIF (Digital RCA) would work, if that is how your connecting them. what was happening, or not happening?

when you setup your sound output devices look for Dolby Digital (no suffixes) or AC-3 support.

The soundcard has a spdif output, but I wasn't sure if I could connect this to the speaker system as it takes a 3.5mm stereo jack as input. Can I get an adapter to covert one to the other?

SPDIF is digital, and your 3.5mm jack is analog. The hare not electrically compatible.

To use the spdif on the sound card, you would have to setup you sound device to use it by default. And you may have to specify Dolby Digital AC-3 somewhere.

Using the 3.5mm jacks you woul need 2 cables, one for front, second for rear. Plug them into their proper jacks, typically green for front and black for rear. And set up your default sound device to reflect the connection, probably 4 channel audio, 5.1 or 4.1 may not sound right.
