Oldie but goodie - squeeze a few more ounces out of it?

Hi all,

I've got an old rig I've given to m g/f so she can play SimCity (2013)

I bought this so it could be overclocked, but I never got round to it.
I've not overclocked before so any advice on what should be achievable would be greatly appreciated.

System specs (everything is at stock):

CPU: Opteron 180
CPU Cooler: Corsair H60 water cooler
MOBO: Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe
RAM: 2 x Mushkin Redline XP4000 2GB (4GB in total)
HDD: 120 GB OCZ Agility 3
GPU: Radeon HD 7870XT
PSU: Jeantech JNP-700-A12C 700w
Windows 7 64 Ultimate

Only thing I'm worried about is the GPU, I can take this out and put in 1 or 2 x1900xtx if necessary.. I don't really want to fry a brand new GPU.

Only CPU. No need for anything else. Here's a guy that achieved good, stable clocks. http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/244723-29-just-overclocked-opteron

So go for it. You should do it through bios of course and you'll get at least specs above. Don't touch GPU cause it won't do any good since it will bootleneck even better CPU's than yours.

Thanks Feldmarschall.. clueless on this stuff, BIOS has an overclock facility- do I avoid this? Should I do whatever I need to do under manual settings?

Check that option and post what's in there. Don't know really for sure what's under the hood. AMI bios usually works under JUMPER FREE.. enter that menu and change CPU multiplier and frequency, set CPU voltage (may work on auto) and set memory frequency.

Remember that if anything goes wrong and PC shut's down after few seconds, or keeps restarting, simply clear CMOS and try again
