Wife's old computer died. Rebuilt my old computer for her. Has gaming motherboard P5n32-E SLI and sound card that came with it. Attempted to go with Windows 7 Pro but then discovered on the ASUS site that this motherboard is not supported under windows 7. Thought this might be my problem, since I could not load the motherboard drivers with disk that came with it. Nor could I get drivers from ASUS site since could not select operating system Windows 7 for this board.
Decided to revert back to Windows XP Pro. Managed to get motherboard CD to run and installed all drivers, including the soundmax drivers for the sound card that came with it. Operating system is now totally up to date with all windows updates. Now with SP3 also. All drivers look good and working properly in device manager. No yellow flags on sound devices. All show good. Even tried to disable digital audo, thinking maybe I needed analog. Still no sound. I can see the visual lights blinking when I play a CD or music from Windows Media Player, like the sound is playing but I hear nothing. Sound speakers are all hooked up properly and I even ran a sound test via the Master volume on my right speaker and it played static noise out of all speakers. Two stereo speakers and floor woofer all work properly. They are Boston speakers. And they were working just fine on wife's old computer, so I know they work fine. But this rebuilt computer just won't play anything out my speakers.
At my witts end. Someone please help before I pull all my hair out.
Thanks in advance.
Michael

When you go to "Sounds and Audio Devices" in the control panel, does everything look fine there? Like the default sound playback device? I'd probably uninstall the drivers, restart the computer, reinstall the drivers, and restart the computer again.

Have done this several times, rebooting between unstall and reinstall and still nothing. Been to Sounds and Audio Devices many times and everything looks fine here too. I even went to each individual sound device and checked for updated drivers and was told each time for each sound device that the drivers were up to date.
Going nuts. Without sound on this computer, it's just a pile of junk sitting here. My wife needs the sound for her Skype and MSN Messenger with here family. No Sound...Usless computer.
Help!!!

If there's a spare PCI slot, a Xonar DG sound card can be had for no more than $30 (not that you'd want to wait around for a sale, but I got mine for $15 or $20 after rebate). Or USB sound cards might be cheaper (but I can't vouch for their quality). Although it seems like your sound should work.

Check BIOS settings? Do you have front panel audio to try? Can you test the Mic and line-in ports (you'd obviously need a visual representation of the sound to test)? I know I'm not offering anything ground breaking, but that's all I can think of, sorry.
