What percentage usage of Ram is good?

Hello,

I have a Toshiba Satellite P875 S7102 with intel i7 3630QM with 8 Gb of RAM, running Windows 8.
Looking at the task manager I often see my RAM usage over 50% (usually between 50 - 60%). I was wondering if that is a good percentage to have, and wondering if upgrading the RAM would greatly help my computer or if it wouldn't really help much with the usage at 50%.

Hard to say.
Windows will keep some unused code in ram in anticipation of reuse.
More ram is better because more can be cached, but probably you would not see any benefit.
The benefit of more ram will come if you are running 64 bit enabled apps like photoshop, or, you are doing heavy multitasking.

If you are really short on ram, you will get A significant number of hard faults per second.
Check the task manager/resource monitor/memory tab for that.

If you have not considered it, a SSD to replace the hard drive is by far the best performance enhancer available.

You would certainly not want to see 50% at idle, but during moderate to heavy usage, it is definitely possible that you are using 4gb plus of RAM. I would be very doubtful that you would ever use your full 8gb unless you are doing tasks that are better suited to a desktop anyways.

Hello mate.

Check your background applications. Steam, skype, open browsers everything draws space from your RAM. So make sure you don't have too much running, when you want to find out about your IDLE usage of the RAM.

50% is fine, as you're not using 90-100% then I can almost with no doubt tell you, that it won't affect your performance in any way.

If you're in doubt wether your RAM isn't working properly, then you can run a RAM test using Intel Burn Test or Prime95.

I had a Toshiba Satellite too, before I reinstall the OS the laptop always uses about 50% RAM ( I have 8GB and i5 CPU ). But after that it only use about 20% RAM. Because the Toshiba software use a lot of the memory, you have to delete some of them, and 8GB RAM is good enough.
