Its not really a pain to set up, just an extra step
In newer games it may not be as performing but a single 7870XT is good enough in those cases

I just don't think its that great of a deal to pay 50% more to get 20% more perf

Also 8gb of ram is enough and you can add more later (ram prices are rising now though so I would grab 2 of the 8gb kits as they are 1866 at the price of 1600)

any other ideas maybe somewhere between. Im not rady to drop 500 on two GFx cards unless that would give huge bump to performance. I've read that its generally better to go for one great card. (edit; i have two other people advising other courses of action so im going to work and seeing how this plays out when i get back)

Here's a nice single set-up rig with the potential for crossfire in the future:

Total is $1,030. Just $30 above your budget because I pretty much put in the best AMD gpu. Are you overclocking? If you're not then you could cut down this build to your budget.

It'll work combining the two suggestions - RealChaos' with the HD7950 Thefer linked... that'll get you under budget with nice components ready for expansion if wanted... looks good that way. Plus the 7950 can be overclocked to better than stock 7970 performance usually

The xfx 7950 only has one fan, so it will run quite hot. Here's a better and "cooler" 7950 by sapphire: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202026&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=
