First off my specs:

Motherboard : Asus M5a97 R2.0
CPU : Athlon IIx4 645 3.1 ghz (Quad)
GPU : Ati Radeon 5770 1GB (1920x1080 monitor)
PSU : TR2 RX 850W
RAM : [4 gb Crucial 1600 Dimm]x2 (8gb total)
HDD : 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Seagate 1TB

Those are the main components of the pc that you might want to know,
for better gaming experience, should I upgrade my graphics card to a Radeon 7850 2GB or get a phenom/fx cpu for better gaming?
Both prices are about $180

Any suggestions?

PS I have a 2nd PCI-e a radeon 7570 for my external 1600x900 monitor just for browsing. not gaming, it's NOT crossfired. Just some extra info, probably switch the 5770 with it if I get a new gfx card.

That's the thing though, my 5770 hasn't been fully utilized in most my experiences. It was decent enough for me but the athlon II has terrible cache for gaming, and is best for hyperthreading (non-gaming use)

It's not that terrible for gaming. Of course that 7850 will be overkill but in most games GPU will not be loaded fully. I get 40% load in Assassins creed 3 with my 4850 and with my friends 480gtx. Only problem is that 480gtx gives me 15 fps more in Boston and that's double the ammount i have with mine.

It's just me who would pick 7850 between those two, cloacked CPU to 3,5 maybe or little higher.
