Can I run dual channel DIMMs in different colored slots?

This is in memory although the problem I am having is primarily with my mobo.

I got a ASUS Maximums formula V about 3 weeks ago, Great board, however this morning I went to turn it on and monitor and peripherals were not lighting up or working.

The on board error display stops at Code 55 which to my research is a memory error or a memory not found error. I have dual channel Corsair Dominator GT's 8gb. I experimented by putting in only one 4gb DIMM into the following and tried to boot:

Left Red : error 55
Left Black: error 55
Right Red: booted into os fine
Right Black: booted into os fine

In conclusion I am guessing my left black and red dimm slots are dead, No idea why.

Its Saturday so cannot contact ASUS as of yet to discuss a replacement if anyone knows why this happened please feel free to share your experience.

But my main question is I can use the mobo but I cannot use my ram in dual channel as one of each color is not working so:

1. Can I put dual channel ram into a red slot and a black slot? what would be the effects of that?

2. Is it OK to be running only one dual channel DIMM?

Thank you for reading and if you contribute any response.

Yes, do this and then contact Asus on Monday. Maximus boards are arguably the best. You're sure it's not your ram? have you interchanged the sticks? and you don't have the memory speed set too high or timings to tight?

Yes I have done the test using both sticks. the ram is only running at 1333, I reset the bios as soon as I could access it.

The ram is fine I tried dual channel in black and red both get error 55. I can only access windows if I have 1 DIMM in either slot right red or right black.

Will run with only 1 DIMM for now.
Thanks for response.
