BIOS Issues with Newly Built Custom Server

Hello Tom’s Hardware forum goers! I have been reading Tom’s hardware and used it for advice for many many years now, but I find myself posting on the forums for the first time now.

I have really ran into a problem and I am hopefully trying to find a solution to my problem without having to ship this hardware back.

I have taken the plunge and decided to build my own server for the first time. My issue is however that once completing the build I boot it up and the BIOS loops many times before it will actually allow me to get into the BIOS or take any other options. Once in the BIOS utility setup or menus I am fine. Once I save and reboot it’ll sit there and loop again another couple dozen times before taking commands.

Here is a quick video of what’s happening:

Note: It was actually behaving well I think it knew it was being watched, but at about 0:53 you'll see that it gets to the Intel Agent and will flip there and reset several times. This is intermittent, but after most reboots I get stuck a that screen flashing at me.

The following is my hardware (if you guys see an incompatibility in here let me know!)

Motherboard:
Asus Z9PE-D16 SSI EEB Dual 2011 Socket DDR3 1600
link

Processor:
2x Intel E5-2620
link

Memory:
64gb (4 sticks) of SDRAM ECC Registered DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600)
link

Power Supply
775watt power supply with EPS 12v rail (this motherboard required 2x 8pin EPS Connectors)

Troubleshooting So Far

I have flashed the BIOS to the most current version and this has not fixed the problem. I have also checked the power being provided and it too is adequate with no below normal voltages and ample wattage.

I am hoping that this is a problem with my setup that I may have overlooked and not faulty hardware. Also my bigger fear as that there is a incompatibility here and that upon receiving a new motherboard after RMA’ing this one will have the same issues.

Thank you guys for any of your help!
Alex

They appear to be. I have them located in A1 , B1 , E1, F1

I have so far been able to successfully get a OS installed on this, however, the problem is persisting during boot time. The Intel Boot Agent Ge seems to be a major part of the problem that it loops on.

Eerily I found a youtube video almost identical to mine with what appears to be a very similar problem.

Boot Agent Loop

I haven't attempted to go with one CPU yet. Was hell of a time getting the coolers in there. Might give it a shot before I send it back. With the CMOS deal I did reset it and there was no change.

Finally found out that there was no problem with the boot looping. The computer does have an extremely long chesum time of the BIOS 3 minutes normally. However when it does POST with a good mark to go it gets to the Intel Boot Agent.

I learned that the windows boot agent attempts to PXE boot PER interface. This motherboard has 5 gigabit interfaces . It attempts to initialize one port at a time. This was why it appeared to boot loop. I changed the BIOS option for it to be "Normal" instead of "Infinite" . It still takes time to initialize take a while but its better than infinite lol.

To get rid of the PXE boot that the Intel Agent is attempting you actually have to flash the Intel Controller thats in charge of your NIC ports.

try to use only 32 Gb of Memory and see how it goes.
