Solution
Hard drive manufacturers consider a Gigabyte to be 1,000,000,000 bytes. Your OS -- and everyone who doesn't fall for the nonsense kibi / mebi / gibi / tebi prefixes -- considers a Kilobyte to be 1024 bytes and therefore a GB to be 1,073,741,825 bytes. A 1 TB (1,000,000,000,000 bytes) hard drive will have about 931 GB of space.
