hello,

I am going to build my first PC soon and I need help which combo is better. I will be playing games like Far Cry 3, Assassins Creed 3, Battlefield 3, Crysis 2 and 3 and DotA 2.

Help would be appreciated. =)

both combo have their strengths and weaknesses.
but the performance disparity between gtx 650ti and radeon hd 7850 is too big, tipping the favor to phenom ii x4's side. the phenom should be overclocked to unlock full potential of the radeon hd 7850. overclocking will also help with bf3 multiplayer.
although, for first build, phenom ii should be coupled with at least a 970 chipset am3+ motherboard so that the pc can be upgraded all the way to fx8350.

As said, for multiplayer games (BF3 etc.) would be the 4core better, but its a piece of old cpu. HD7850 crushes GTX650ti.
Another thing which wasn't mentioned, do you have enough energy to run such a card with this AMD?(3220 takes 55W, 965 takes over 100W i think) - if you would combine it with HD7850, you would have to go with at least 500W (full efficiency at 400W).
I personally went with i3 3220 and HD7770(similar to GTX650ti). I can't comlain at all.

I would say that the AMD build is superior. Especially once overclocked as my 965 @ 4.3Ghz equals or betters an i5 2500K at stock clocks.

Also, since this is a new build I would recommend getting a good 990FX motherboard to guarantee a future upgrade path to a faster CPU.

According to Cinebench R10 - Single Threaded Benchmark tests (and generally known fact) the i3 has 50% faster single core than the old 965. You'll know the difference when playing non-MP games. If you would drop it to only 40% "slower" after oveclocking 965, ask yourself if it's worth it.

Defo the AMD combo option.

But with this mobo..
