I'm planning on buying an i5 2500k and GTX650ti and I am interested in what is required for the cpu and CUDA functionality to operate at the same time, used by the same program.

Looking at a certain program for computational chemistry (cc being the main reason behind the buy): http://classic.chem.msu.su/gran/gamess/cuding.html an AMD Phenom II X4 955 cannot utilize all cpu cores and all cuda devices at the same time and the sugesstion is that the Phenom does not have Hyper Threading. I understand nVidia gpus may not be the best fit for AMD processors and vice versa but can it really be the HT ? In my oppinion there should not be a connection

in other words if i buy a i5 cpu without HT can i expect the same problem ? these calculations usually take hours to days to complete (on small molecular systems at least) so I am looking at some instructions/day hungry software.

I just want to know is there something in the chipset of different mother boards or in different gpus and cpus that defines wether they can work together (only in the sense that CUDA is enabled) or not.

Can I mix AMD cpu, AMD mb and nVidia CUDA gpu to use all processing power together ? (it seems a cheeper solution and the phenom above is obviously not the latest AMD cpu)

Was it just a problem in the program ? after all this is a new technology of sorts and still highly in testing

what kind of software runs cpus + cuda devices at the same time at max utilization

-i7s are faster and you can overclock them to gain around 10% more performance, but then you can just wait a few months for haswell which will overclock better and perform 10% or so better
-you will want more ram than that
-if its not a major brand, the odds are that its crap
-you wouldnt need that much wattage unless you are going SLi, but then if you are going to SLi 660s, why not just get a 670 in the first place
-if you are overclocking, you will need a heatsink

get this CPu instead. its a i7 for the cost of a i5. it would be odd if your program does not recognize the virtual cores properly, but it should. as for the phenom , its 4 actual cores

as for the GPU, you will want at least a gtx 660 to get any real work done

the motherboards dont really affect whether the program works or not

dead on +1

if your not gaming with the gpu...gtx 500 series (only gtx570/580s ) actually have higher compute performance than gtx 600 series since gk104 was meant to be the main stream card though it ended up the flagship since it was good enough to fight off amd 7000 series...gtx titan is a gk110 and meant for compute...awesomely so.

Am I not going to get more performance with an oc i5 or i7, even the one I liked ?
also am I going to need more a specific kind of ram like buffered ecc (isn't it slower?)

thanx for the advices tho ... I think I'll orient towards the gtx660

no you won't and yes it is...also hotter.

you dont need ECC ram unless you are doing some work that doesnt allow for a small error to ever happen

the i7 is 35% or so % faster than a i5 at stock speeds. overclocking a i5 to its max potential still wont ever reach the i7 level in multi-threaded tasks. the e3 1230v2 is your best bet

I really wanted to oc something for a first time in my life and as much as I like xeon just for the principles of it, I saw it's very similar to an i7, and I might push myself for the price a little bit

ASUS GTX660-DC2O-2GD5 Graphics Cards GTX660-DC2O-2GD5
Intel Core i7-3770K Quad-Core Processor 3.5 GHz 8 MB Cache LGA 1155 - BX80637I73770K
Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 MHz (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory (CML8GX3M2A1600C9)
True Spirit 120M (Made specifically for Micro ATX & mini tower case user.)
Corsair Enthusiast Series TX 750 Watt ATX/EPS 80 PLUS Bronze
Gigabyte Intel Z77 LGA 1155 AMD CrossFireX/NVIDIA SLI W/ HDMI,DVI,DispayPort Dual UEFI BIOS ATX Motherboard GA-Z77X-UD3H

I expect this to work better as a configuration ?
what are the pros and cons between the xeon and this i7 ? besides the price/performance @ stock clock
and is this mb good for the i7
also if I go with the xeon what mb can you advice me to get

once again you've all been very helpful so far :D

while im at it
i live in bulgaria (its in the EU), europe
do you have any idea if i can simply shop from amazon or what is the best place that can ship here, cos newegg isnt going to do it and i bet most us retailers arent going to
or at least what kind of couriers can i use, cos the prices @ amazon altho higher than newegg are much better than here

(i just dont want to star a new topic, plus i cant find a forum section for that in this website)
