Hello, I have an internal HDD for Desktop PC (WD 250GB IDE/ATA) with the following details:
S/N: WCARZ0747428, Mdl: WD2500AAJB-00WGA0, Date: 25.08.2008, DCM - HANNNTJCA,
WWN: 50014EE15647956B, NMB - 003 Classe B, Cananda - ICES 003 Class B,
PCB: 2060 701494-001 REV A.
Until recently it was working fine with slave HDD (Samsung 40GB IDE/ATA - OS WinXP installed on this drive) and one day the SMPS got overheated and needed replacement and while replacing, it was found that the connectors were for SATA drive and one power connector was for CD drive and no power connector for HDD. However, the cables from SATA power pin (flat) was removed and changed to IDE power pin (4 pin). While doing this the 4 cables were incorrectly placed and connected to HDD (IDE/ATA). The WD250 GB HDD went undetectable and when connected with Samsung 40 GB, it is not letting to boot up at all. Iam assuming this as physical damage to PCB of WD250 GB HDD, not sure though.
Please let me know what option do I have to recover my all data from WD 250 HDD.
Can I replace the PCB and get it ON? will it work?
Can I recover data by converting the drive into USB plug n play?if so then how to proceed what accessory i need to use??I tried connecting with USB to IDE/SATA adaptor (attachment3), but in vein, no success.
I have lots of valuable data (~ 150 GB) stored in that HDD. I need it back very much.

Changing a hard drive circuit board is for experts.
you need not only exact same hard disk version but same firmware version
second hand ATA drives are getting rarer and harder to find
Are there any signs of burnt chips on the circuit board ?
If Not what about the ATA configuration jumpers there is:-
master, slave, master with slave, cable select
(settings usually marked on drive label or available from WD website)
normally master is best to use when by itself .
It is not clear what or how you went wrong I assume you are using a modular power supply or some sort of SATA to molex connector
[term SMPS (Switched Mode Power Supply) is not often used as all current PC & laptop PSU's are switched mode]
If drive is dead then I hope you have a backup or a lot of money for professional repairs
Thanks Mr. Barnes,
the Ada configuration for 250GB WD IDE HDD is set to 'master with slave'. SMPS is installed in my desktop. when i tried to replace SMPS (main power box given in CPU cabinet) with new one, I saw that it has only two IDE power pin and 2 SATA power pin (flat black) where as i needed 3 IDE power pin to connect to HDD 40Gb, HDD 250 GB and CD drive. Now the pin of SATA was removed and IDE power pin(from old SMPS) was connected to the cables thereby connecting to 250GB HDD. when doing so, initially PC turned ON. but got hanged and after restart no bootup. removed 250GB HDD and tried booting up with 40GB, working fine. but everytime I connect 250 GB HDD it again happens, wont let PC to bootup at all. now i have connected 250 GB HDD with USB to SATA/IDE adaptor converting it as external HDD as USB device. it shows up as USB Mass storage device found (no drive letter). but again cannot open drive since it wont shows up in My Computer.
please any help on point by point for below querries??
1 what option do I have to recover my all data from WD 250 HDD.
2 Can I recover data by converting the drive into USB plug n play?if so then how to proceed what accessory i need to use??I tried connecting with USB to IDE/SATA adaptor (attachment3), but in vein, no success.
3 How about using external enclosure? will it work with assuring to recover data
I have all my necessary & valuable data (~ 150 GB) stored in that HDD. I need it back very much.
