I've recently decided to move to linux mint on my laptop (thank you steam). my preferred version is linux mint 14 MATE 64 bit. however, installing amd FGLRX drivers is required to play team fortress 2 (and get far better frame rates with other games). installing it makes team fortress 2 crash, and minecraft crash, and is just generally terrible. however, if i use ubuntu 12.04 64 bit, these problems are non-existent. everything works fine. can anybody explain this, and possibly tell me how to fix this issue? (bit of a linux noob here) thanks for the help!
This is a asus k53ta laptop with an amd a6-3400m apu.

I've had the best luck with Steam games when using the latest beta driver from AMD. I'm running Mint 13 KDE though.

Steam has always said that they officially support Ubuntu (unless that has changed recently). People have had success running many other distros but nothing is guaranteed. Have you submitted the issue to Valve?

I've submitted the issue to valve, and to the mint forums. forums couldnt suggest anything, and valve cant re-produce the problem. steam and mint work fine when i tested on my desktop, which has intel hd 2000. everything worked. same story with a nvidia 550ti.

Have you tried the beta driver? I had a steam update where the not too long ago where CS:S would no longer run. I updated to the beta driver and everything was fine again.

Are you downloading the latest driver from AMD, or are you using the "additional driver" install in Mint?
