Recently come into a bit of cash, looking to build my own PC for the first time and while I've done some research, I'm still looking to avoid classic newbie errors. This is what I've got so far:
Approximate Purchase Date: ASAP
Budget Range: Up to £1,000 total, but willing to go a little over if cost effective
System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, work (requiring lots of spreadsheets and a couple of databases programs open at the same time), general internet and multimedia
Are you buying a monitor: No - but am planning on eventually getting a second monitor
Do you need to buy OS: Yes
Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Aria or Overclockers - only because they've already been recommended to me, open to any other suppliers
Location: South East UK
Parts Preferences: Intel CPU and nvidia GPU
Overclocking: Maybe - if cost effective
SLI or Crossfire: Maybe - although research suggests it's not really value for money
Your Monitor Resolution: 1680x1050
Additional Comments: Needs to run Windows, 7 or 8, but wouldn't mind also being able to boot Ubuntu. Would like to run Skyrim at top settings too. Have two 500GB Hitachi HDP725050GLA360 hard drives that work fine and I would also like to incorporate into the build as additional storage
And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: Most of my current desktop is 5 years old and not running so great
Here's what I've got so far:
Motherboard: Asus P8Z77-V LX £86
Seems to have everything I need for the other components I've chosen
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-514-AS
CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K £200
Good performance/value ratio
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-404-IN
RAM: Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 16GB £100
Plenty of memory, enough for gaming, should handle lots of spreadsheets for work too.
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-347-CS
GPU: ASUS GeForce GTX 660TI Direct CU II 2048MB GDDR5 £240
Again, research tells me this is a good performance/value ratio
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-283-AS
SSD: Samsung 120GB SSD 840 SATA 6Gb/s £90
Enough SSD space to make the best of it
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-161-SA
HD: Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache £66
Fast main storage drive, with backup from existing HDs will be enough space for anything I want to do
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-257-SE
Unfortunately, that's as far as I can get. I'm aware that I might need some of the following things:
Case: I know it needs to be big enough to keep everything in, but that's about it
PSU: Would 600W be enough? I'm just not sure.
Cooling: How much do I need? Fans or water?
Sound card: A lot of people have said I needn't bother with one, is this true?
I'm open to any and all advice or suggestions. Thanks.
