Nowadays which is better for gaming or will have a significant effect. In previous posts (2010-12) people said that dual cores are great for gaming and that most games are programmed to run a single one, let alone two. But games like BF3 and Crysis 3 are using more than four cores. I myself will be playing games like CS:S, TF2, L4D 2, CS:GO, Vanilla WoW and running applications such as Visual Studio 2010, Photoshop (basic stuff). What I am wondering is that would an i3 3220 (Intel dual core) be better, or worse, than a FX 4300 (AMD quad core).

They will be paired with a GTX 650 Ti OC 1GB, Windows XP and 4 GB of RAM.

The i3 right now is the better option. Programing games to use multiple cores is really, really difficult. Or at least programming games to use multiple cores evenly is really, really difficult. Some things like sound can be dedicated to a single core, but it doesn't create that much performance of an increase.

If there is a breakthrough so wide that not only can 4 or more cores be used evenly, but doesn't scale well down to 2 cores, it is years away.

Get the i3. the fx4300 isnt a true quad core, you will get better fps with the i3. if you want an amd cpu, ill go with the Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition . Its cheaper, a true quad core, and will give you better fps on multithreader games like crysis3 and batterfield 3

Well then would an i5 3470 be a solid investment. I will be gaming but the games I play I checked on game debate will work perfectly with my system and games nowadays are kind of lame, short and boring. But performance wise, like raw performance, as in compiling 400,000 lines of code performance would the i3 3220 be a good choice.

If you have extra money to spend, it would be better spent on a higher end graphics card.

I'd still say FX-6300.

And I'd also triple check everything you order has XP drivers. I just put together a Vista rig and found some poor driver availability. Everything is designed around 7 and 8 now.
