4870x2 too noisy

None that I can think of, the 4870x2 was noisy (and hot) even when new.
You might improve matters by removing the heatsink and fan assembly, cleaning it out and renewing the thermal paste with a high quality one.
Adding a front intake or side fan to improve ventilation to the card may also help, but that depends on the case and how many fans are already installed.

You could always pick up a card like a 7870 and upgrade the board, CPU, and RAM as your E7500 and 4870 are nearing towards the minimum requirements in games these days. The 8000 series wont be around until 2014. You will notice a solid upgrade for around 700 USD and will be quite future-proof.
