Hi,

I have an older pc with meager specs ( phenom x3 8450, ecs gf8200, 4gbddr2).

I had 4670 installed before but it has long died out on me and had been using the onboard graphics for a few months now. Since its just onboard graphics, all i have been using the pc for is to watch videos and play older games.

I have been thinking of playing some "newer" games (like diablo 3). hence I was eyeing in giving my pc an upgrade by purchasing either a 7750 or 7770.

Here are my questions:

1. i have a 600w psu that does not have any efficiency rating(can't even remember the brand). I would be replacing it soon with an aerocool x strike 500w. would either of the abovementioned cards have enough of their needed juice from this psu?

2. if I am just playing games in low to mid settings, would I really need an 7770? or will an 7750 would do for me?

3. is there a thing as too much of a graphics card? would my meager pc specs cause a bottleneck for these cards or vice versa?

I am glad that I have access to the opinions of the experts here at tom's.

Thank you for your help in advance.

a no brand psu is pretty dangerous to your system
the new one you will be exchanging should be enough to power the 7770 or the 7750
there is really not much of a difference between these two as they have very similar performance
here are a couple of benchmarks for reference

if you want a smoother gameplay on games you are better off with the 7770
but if you are not willing to shell out a couple more bucks then go for the 7750 no problem with that
your cpu will not bottleneck your gpu either (they hardly ever do)
1. For a 7750 or 7770, 600W is plenty. 80+ Bronze or above is preferred but if not..it'll do. If you are replacing it, buy one of these: Seasonic, Antec, or XFX.

2. 7750 is fine. Diablo 3 is not GPU intensive.

3. Yes. Some people buy a high end card and don't utilize it (ex. use 900p monitor w/ 7950)

For Diablo 3 I'd buy a 1gb 7750.

1) 500w is enough power for much more gpu then a 7750 or 7770. You can even step it up to a 78xx series gpu...

2) at mid to low settings it would depend on the resolution. if we're talking about 720p you can get away with a 7750. if you're talking HD, you'll need a 7770 to play on low/mid settings.

3) yes, your cpu will bottleneck some gpus. no matter what new gpu you get you'll notice a jump in frame rate the moment you update that cpu. Something to think about going forward will be to update that cpu to a PhIIx4 965... the AM3 chips generally will work in an AM2+ MB, just make sure there is an available bios update for your MB to support the PhIIx4 965.
