I have bought a new desktop with this Gigabyte motherboard and it has on-board graphics. What kind of a proper graphics card would be compatible.

Just so you understand the motherboard does not have a graphics chip. That graphics capapbility comes with the CPU that has an internal graphics chip. The best CPU for that board is the i5 3570K. It can be overclocked but it has intels HD4000 iGPU.

When you go to an add on graphics card you just use the card not the graphics on the CPU.

well I paid for the computer £520 and a monitor for 150 and I want a decent graphics card because i bought witcher 2 and still does not so well even on low details

How much are you willing to pay for the graphics card?
What country are you buying it from?
What are your full specs especially the power supply?
