Game controller freezes boot at POST

Have run across a bit of an odd problem:

I have recently been bitten (again) by the flight sim bug. This is a recurring issue with me--medicine doesn't help <grin>--so I dug out my old Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 USB joystick, which works very well with Windows 7 64-bit....with one exception.

If the joystick is plugged in, the system will freeze on the POST screen during reboot. If you remember to unplug it before reboot and plug it back in after Windows loads, it works perfectly.

This is a new build and has been rock-solid in every other way--I've been super pleased.

Here are the gory details:

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H
CPU: i3570K
RAM: 8 GB G.SKILL Ripjaws X series DDR3-1600
GPU: Sapphire 7950

I am running BIOS F18 on the motherboard. I have tried setting legacy USB support to "disabled" in the BIOS, also tried setting USB XHCI handoff to "disabled"--neither of these seems to have an effect.

Has anyone seen this behavior, and does anyone know a work-around (other than leaving the joystick unplugged unless it is actually in use)?

Thanks! As always, I greatly appreciate the knowledge and help of the community!

If this is an halt on post, you can disable the Halt on error option in the bios (it'll boot even if some errors occur and with the controller plugged-in)

You could try to disable USB boot option, make the HDD/SSD first boot devices, maybe the mobo try to start on the usb controller as some have a integrated small memory flash to keep your personal settings and it cause to halt/freeze...

If the bios crash (no post), i don't know if there's another way other than leave it unplugged or change the controller model (you can pick a XBOX wired controller or buy a USB dungle for the wireless ones if you own a Xbox 360, it work flawlessly with every games and it doesn't halt on post for me on my 4 rig)

My best guess would be a conflict with the motherboards UEFI BIOS and the Sidewinder because I do not have that problem with my Asus Z77 Sabertooth and leave my Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 USB plugged in all the time but have never used any Gigabyte motherboard. If you are using the latest BIOS there may not be anything you can do but unplug it during reboots.
