With most cards you get a free adapter, its plug and play so don't worry. You can purchase one for cheap if the GPU does not have one.

No. It's likley you'll just get a black screen. If you're graphics card is connected to the MB, and up and running, then the graphics card is your source for graphics. Your monitor will need to be connected to the graphics card.

The other posters have provided the best solution to your problem: DVI-to-VGA adapter.

That depends on what PC you have, but to utilize a graphics card to its full extent on ANY PC, you need to plug it in the graphics card.
