Is there a way to manually check for signs of a keylogger in the windows 8 environment?

My pc locked up for a few seconds in 2 separate instances: one when I was just about to login to facebook, and another time after I typed in my password to login to my yahoo account on windows live mail.

I have spybot and windows essentials but I have found nothing.

Another thing that fuels my suspicion is that my yahoo mail sometimes shows messages as "read" even when I know I have not read them. I used to suspect that this may be because I also have my yahoo account setup on my phone and that the messages show up as read when they are downloaded by my phone, but now I'm not sure =/

facebook and yahoo use Web Beacons or Web Bugs to track you accross the internet so they can customize you ads to your surfing habits, if you use the free email service. This is on by default and has to be modified on this page http://info.yahoo.com/privacy/us/yahoo/details.html
so my theory is they were just collecting the information they have gathered on you, and were adjusting the ads accordingly.
to opt out go to that page and
"
Click on the phrase "Web Beacons." On the page that opens, find a paragraph entitled "Outside the Yahoo Network."

In that section find a little "Click Here to Opt Out" link that Will let you "opt-out" of their snooping. "

you can adjust the facebook one in prefrences

Thanks for the tips!

I've tried malwarebytes web scan thing, and so far so good. I also installed spybot 2, nothing there either, just some registry key inconsistencies.

I've also opted out of the yahoo ad thing. The facebook settings seem fine.

For now, I'm checking to see if any mailbox messages are still showing up as read when I haven't read them.
