What is the fiber standard for home/office use?
There are lots of multi and single mode fiber at different wave lengths, is there one that has been settled on for the home and office use. I may have to do some longer runs >100 m so I thought I'd go to fiber for this.

Thanks

Fiber is still very expensive for home use, so i recommend ethernet over coax cable (they sell converters), or using multiple strings of ethernet with a powered switch or and old router inbetween the wires.

Standard would be 1000BASE LX for longer distances, I would look for 1000BASE-SX, that would be your best bet for the lengths without going overboard on cable thickness and wavelength.

If you choose a switch with SFP slot, then you can always change fiber module later, which is now not expensive at all, and for most suppliers, also in China or Taiwan, you can pre-order fiber patchcord with a lenght you need.
for example, take 200 m SC-SC patchcord, and order 2 units of such media converter with SFP slot: http://www.ad-net.com.tw/index.php?id=270
If you later want increase the distance over 2 km (which is max distance for Multimode fiber), you can then just change SFP module inside converter.
Most cheap fiber devices however, will be with fiber module on board, like this for example: http://www.ad-net.com.tw/index.php?id=42

Now, if more ETH ports are needed, I suggest "multiply" ethernet ports by simple 5 - 8 port switches bought in any PC store.
