I am building a machine with a motherboard Intel Desktop Board DH77KC (http://ark.intel.com/products/59506/Intel-Desktop-Board...). It is an ATX motherboard. Is any case that is ATX by definition compatible?
Thanks.

Yes. That is what standards are for.

Yes. Do take note there are different sizes of ATX such as mini ATX and extended ATX.

The sizes going from smallest to largest go from mATX, ATX, eATX.

There are more sizes, but those are the 3 common ones. Smaller sizes of motherboard can fit in larger cases (ie mATXmobo in an ATX case)

I figured that the motherboard will fit in the case. My concern is about the ports, because I saw various mobos and cases that were marked as ATX but had different numbers of ports. How do I know if they're compatible?

All mobos come with a plate that fits into a generic rectangular cutout in the case and all the ports pass through the openings in the plate.
