It would be based off your motherboard, since your processor is socket 775, it would mean you can upgrade to DDR2 800 Mhz, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231122

Considering the age of your processor, you're probably still on a 32 bits windows. If so, 4gb is the max you'd want, because windows 32 bits only uses like 3.5 gb of RAM, and 64 bits can use lots more. So go with 4gb of RAM - and that's DDR2 RAM (not DDR3), because your motherboard being older, DDR3 is probably incompatible with it.

Most likely not, older machines like that are usually on 32 bit operating systems. which can only use up to 4gb

To upgrade the Ram you would have to buy a 64 Bit operating system. Wipe your hard drive, and reinstall the 64 bit operating system. Which your would want to buy a retail copy not a OEM version. OEM versions can only be tied to one motherboard. So you don't want to spend that much money on a dated motherboard, at least if you bought a retail version you could keep using it in the future.
So you would want to buy this. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002DHGMK0/?tag=pcpapi-20 that would allow you to upgrade to 8 gigs of ram. Which would cost you another 120 roughly. So by the time you were done. you would have almost 300 dollars into a ram upgrade.... better off to start buying new components to build a new computer.

You can tell by the motherboard, if you look up whatever motherboard you have or are interested in. Under its specs it will have a supported memory section.
