hello everyone

i have another question as i'm nearing the end of my build. i have my SSD in place and after i install my operating system etc i should have my HDD ready to go in..

i've been thinking of getting two drives and separating work from gaming (500gb each) i was curious is there a way to switch off one of the drives when not in use to save power and reduce heat or do you not think its necessary?

i'd prefer to do this with a switch in one of the bays rather than open the case every time if its possible.

cheers

regards alex

you can disable a hard drive in bios but the problem as long as the power connector is plugged it...it still gets power. you have to physically pull the power plug. you could try putting you each one in separate external enclosures and use eSATA port on the back or top of your case to plug in....that way only the drive you want is connected and you don't have to open your case each time to unplug on or replug it in.

Do you mean completely off? if no you can disable them after some time from windows power options.
but if you want to completely disable the drive then you are gonna need a small switch(2channel for red and yellow wire) attached to the hdd power cable. Then use a dremel to attach the switch to your case.

+ 1 for the switch
this would also work.

both are viable choices prefer the first if you are not so good with tools and electronics.

yes you could use hot swappble bays...i don't know why i didn't think of that one myself...just make sure to pull it out when your not useing a drive...cause again as long as they are connected to the psu...the get power.

o.k. thanks for the response guys theres a few options to choose from here, ive also found this http://www.cooldrives.com/4posaiisw3ba.html now i don't know if that will work or not, but this is the kind of design i was looking for.

i suppose i could get the housing set up in the bay underneath my rom drive and wire the switch into it!! but i'm not the most advanced in wiring/electronics, i think i'm competent in learning and following instructions so i was wondering how simple it could be to wire the switch up to the power cable (doesn't sound complicated.)

regards

alex

p.s.

just an update ****

i have found these http://www.ebay.com/itm/orico-brand-new-4-sata-hard-dri...

i think this is pretty much what i'm looking for, so i thought i'd let people know incase they are interested.

@ OP. You also ask “or do you not think its necessary?” Nope, not necessary at all. Very little power consumption and very little heat.

However, if you insist, the hot swap option is easiest.
