I have an HP G42 laptop with intel hd graphics and its screen's resolution was 1280x800. It was working fine until i shut down the pc one day and let some updates be installed. Now whenever I boot up the pc, there is a black area to the right side of the screen. Also the taskbar is not fully appearing on the screen. I tried updating the drivers and adjusting the resolution, but this problem persists. Can y'all suggest a fix?

in safe mode....go into your device manager and uninstall your graphics and anything related to your screen...it may go black on you and you may have to cold boot it...ie hold the power button tell it goes off then start it up again. when windows reboots (assuming it does go black it may not) it will reinstall the drivers and hopefully fix your issue.

Try booting into safe mode first before trying atomicWAR's idea. Push f10 or f11, depends on mobo, during start up and pick safe mode then enter. If that loads normal it is almost positively a display driver issue.
