I've been playing RPGs for quite a few years and have noticed that I haven't really enjoyed anything made in the last 5+ years except the first Dragon Age. Can anyone recommend a newer game that is similar to Baldur's Gate or Neverwinter Nights? Games with an in depth story that leave the character creation to you but don't force you to become the same generic character as everyone else (looking at you elder scrolls).

Have you played the Mass Effect trilogy? Among my favorite games of all time. Not so much a fantasy setting as scifi but the backstory is as rich and in depth as anything ever done in gaming.

Blizzards Diablo games are excellent dungeon crawler RPGs that have amazing story lines. But that is not for everyone.

Witcher 1 and 2 is great too, but very long on some stages... Risen 1 and 2 is pretty cool too.

I already said that I'm against the Elder Scrolls games. As much as the characters appear to be customisable, the games all push you towards the same character. A vast majority of your skills (like stealth) are not actually useful beyond one or two optional quests. They are enjoyable as a 'pick up and play' type game like Grand Theft Auto, but are not enjoyable as an RPG experience.

I have played them all, but found the character customisation to be limited. Beyond picking your initial class there isn't really any character building.

I absolutely loved Diablo 2 back in the day. Was pretty disappointed at the 3rd one unfortunately. :/

You can play as a male or female Shepard and there are the varied romance options. To me Mass Effect was almost as customizable as Dragon Age Origins. Dragon Age II was decent but had very little replay value. Hopefully Dragon Age 3 will be as good as the first one.

The other games I can play over and over are Fallout 3 and New Vegas. A good 100 hours each with the DLC and pretty customizable characters.

Well, when it comes to the Elder Scrolls, you have to pick how you plan to play the character from the start, then play through. Stealth is a very deadly method of play that is exceptional at killing.

If you find yourself always doing the same skills, the game has no reply value. Try a stealth assassin with bow and alchemy, try stealth assassin with swords and illusion (they compliment each other very well). Try a destruction mage with armor, try another mage using conjuration or alteration without armor. Go sword and shield with without blacksmith and enchanting, using only alchemy.

Pick a role, and stick with it, then they become a lot more fun.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That said, it seems clear you like the Baldur's gate style of RPG the most. A party based, strong story game. Besides Dragon Age Origins and Neverwinter nights, and Mass Effect, I can't think of any others off hand.

The Witcher has zero customisation. I've always found Risen and Gothic to be quite buggy, not sure if I have bad luck of if the games just don't have smooth combat. I might give Risen another try thought if nothing better comes up.

Darksiders 1& 2 might be worth trying, as I see you do play some single character RPG's too.

Darksiders is a bit like a cross between Tomb Raider Underworld and Batman, but with RPG skills.

I know you are looking for more modern titles, but I suggest checking out the old Ultima series. They were some of the best RPGs of their time and did a lot to define the genre. If you like MMOs, I would suggest some of the Ultima Online free servers. Some are quite outstanding and well populated and the game seems right up your line of interest.

The graphics are late 90's, but the game play is incredible.

As for more recent, I know you said you don't like Skyrim, but check out Morrowind. It is quite different from the more recent Elder Scrolls in that it doesn't feel quite like it was designed for the masses and can be much more free and challenging.

Ultimately, I agree that the more recent RPG releases have been mediocre at best.

I'm with you buddy. Recently went back to FF7 on my Vita because nothing else has really been amazing. There was a Dungeons and Dragons Tactics game for the PSP that I liked. It was like DnD + FF Tactics. Not super new but newer than Ultima. Lots of customization.

That's all I got. I hear there is a new Neverwinter coming though, let's hope they don't break it.

Oh, the new Shadowrun looks fun too.

Also if you're really looking for new rpgs and other games just wait a tiny bit longer a ton and I mean a LOT of vrand new interresting looking rpgs are coming out next year for the next generation consoles. Some of them that may be worth looking up are Dragon Age 3, the Witcher 3, Thief, Dying Light, plus new star wars and star trek rpgs.

I would recommend Neverwinter Nights 2. It has a very high replay value as you can choose among races that has their own unique characteristics and same goes with the classes. You have like 12 classes to choose from at the character creation point. After that you can set up a path to choose one of the prestige classes that is suitable with your inital class. Also, oppposite to many RPGs, yor diplomatic skills are as important as your combat skills so this enables you to play the game as a sweet-talker. I really enjoyed the game and completed it like 6 times with different classes and races. You should give it a try.

Im playing Baldurs Gate 2 this is the best game in my opinion and a 50 dollar laptop runs it. Diablo, Icewind Dale which I havent tried yet are all inspired from this game kinda like lord of the rings bookwise, you know what im sayin.. Its 2013 and kinda shame they cant make something similar with all their new gear...

Fallout 2, 3, and New Vegas. I prefer New Vegas because there are ~6 different factions you can side with if you want to. Aside from the factions there are multiple different paths to take. The main storyline is not even 10% of the game. Character customization is huge, with 100's of perks to choose from and around 20 "special" skills to invest into. The perks grant access to things, such as "Having a high speech skill could help you influence someone to join you as a companion, or having a high explosives skill could help you with explosive weapons along with special chat options for people who need to know something about explosives." All in all its a great game, very customization from character appearance to weapons to teammates to questlines. You can never play it twice and get the same game.

Check out the recently released 'shadowrun returns'. This has a lot of text based charactisation that you may have enjoyed from BG and NWN.

If you like ARPGs, a real and unique ARPG is Dark Souls. It has an unreachable quantity of playable ways and customizations and a very hardcore gameplay. The environment atmosphere, the designs and the story background is absolutely authentic and interesting.

If you can fluidly progress in gameplay's ability, then you'll love it. If you don't like hardcore challenges, then you will not.

Good luck.

Borderlands 1 and 2 - even though not strictly RPG, it completely pulls you in from the moment it starts (including the fantastic intro video). And after you finish the first playthrough, you can go on in a "True vault hunter mode", where bandits and monsters are tougher... Trust me, it's great, I finished it (each of them) 4 or 5 times with different characters...

similar to baulders gate you say?

baulders gate: dark alliance 2 (the sequel)
diablo iii (really fun, i would recommend the console version as i think its better)
sacred 2 (a bit monotonous but well made)
kingdoms of amalur: reckoning (a fairly well done rpg)
dragons dogma + dark arisen (one of the best made rpgs i've ever seen. only thing lacking is multiplayer)
demon's souls + dark souls + dark souls 2 (great action rpgs. fairly hard though)
champions of norrath+champions return to arms (same era as baulders gate and about as good)

out of all of them... what would my personal favorites be?

currently i'm playing diablo iii on ps3 and it is quite fun. a little short per se but still fun and its multiplayer.

i was very impressed with dragons dogma and i loved the new content with dark arisen (even if it was a bit of a rip off to re-release the game with the content instead of making it an add on or dlc) and honestly the only reason i gave up on it (temporarily... i will definitely get back to it) is because of a game bug where my character got deleted. other than this fact.... the game is truley great. oh and i'd love to see a version of multiplayer where you can play on one console or online and coop quests but perhaps we will see that in the future on the next version (if there is one).

Those may be good games, but everyone of them is more of a Diablo like game, than a Baldur's Gate game. This is just so you are aware, as I liked most those games too.

Neverwinter Nights series
Dragon Age series
Knights of the Old Republic series
Mass Effect series

These are all similar to Baldur's Gate. They are party based RPG's with dialog and big story lines.

@bystander... not sure i agree with you there...

i have a copy of both baulders gate: dark alliance and the sequel dark alliance ii and have played them both.

champions of norrath and champions return to arms are cut from the same cloth as those titles. while definitely a different game they are very similar in feel. in fact they might be slightly better.

sacred 2 is also a party based game with a long storyline but it doesnt have quite the feel to it that baulders gate did.

i agree that the single player games i mentioned are more diabloeque but still very well done and worth recommending for anyone who liked baulders gate.

i've always wanted to play NWN myself but find it hard to bring myself to get something with graphics that old. that sounds strange considering how i went out of my way to get baulders gate when i saw it. ahh... nostalgia.

Sacred 2, while you may be able to play online with players, is not a party based game. In its single player format, you play alone. It is very much like Diablo, you play alone, but can play with a few players on line if you choose, but it is purely a hack and slash.

So are all of those games. They are all hack and slash. Which is like Diablo.

They are all RPG's, and may share a similar fantasy world, they are hack and slash. Baldur's gate and the games I mentioned, all require you to control several characters by yourself, and have a lot of dialog with those characters.

I'm not arguing that they aren't good games, only they are hack and slash RPG's, as opposed to being a party based RPG.

If you haven't, and considering you got Baldur's Gate, get Dragon Age: Origins. That is the closest thing there is to a modern day Baldur's gate.

i dislike dragons age as much as i do skyrim. i just dont like how the gameplay is.

i think we should just agree to disagree on that point about what is similar and what is not to baulders gate. we all have our own opinion i am sure.

Apparently you are talking about a different Baldur's Gate. I'm pretty sure I have the right one, as he is also comparing it to Neverwinter Nights, which again, is no where near a hack and slash.

i sort of figured as much. yes i've heard of nwn and i've heard of the original baulders gate but the first one that came to mind was the ps2 classic. as it was not really specified and to be honest they are all related in some way it really doesnt matter.

For customizable character based games that also fall in t D&D universe, you might like Dungeons and Dragons Online. Lot of character customization, but the game is not turn based.
