Hi guys

I recently bought an MSI GTX 650 Ti Power Edition OC card, but realise after buying that MSI reccomends a 500W or higher power supply with a minimum 12V current rating of 38A

I have a 420W PSU with a 12V current rating of 25A. My current consumption is still low enough to use the card with only 420W, but my question is: Will I be able to safely run the card at 25A when MSI reccomends 38A?

the standard GTX 650 Ti only requires 20A and 400W. I think the Power Edition is higher because it uses something called Triple Over-Voltage. Do you think it will be possible to tweak my cards' ampiere consumption down to 25A or 20A using MSI afterburner?

I have one on my 300 watt 22amp psu :)

What else is in the system(my system is VERY light) and what psu are you running

Just to ensure, you have this card right? @ 993mhz or something

Oh wow. My system is mostly quite light: 2 RAM sticks, 3 7200HDDs, DVD Multi drive.. nothing much extra really. My PSU is a Thermaltake TR2 420W ATX 12V 2.0. I analysed my system specs with this tool: http://www.extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine and came out with a recommended wattage of 336W. But it says nothing about amps so I'm a bit scared of the card really requiring 38amps. That picture looks like the card I have but I have the Power Edition with 'Triple Over-Voltage' it is also OC at 993mhz. Do you have the Power Edition too?

Yes, my card is a Power edition. The over voltage is limited to the top speed state. I actually wanted to use it in reverse to undervolt the card(but could not).

As long as your system is not overclocked or using a very high powered cpu, I think you should be ok.

The most I ever used was 2 hard drives(3.5 inch 7200 rpms) in my system due to space issues(and it had a 5770 at the time).

My system is as follows(at current)

i5 750 undervolted(every watt counts)
2 x 4gigabyte sticks of corsair xms (1.35 volts down from the stock 1.65)
128 gigabyte M4
1TB notebook drive(again, less power)
Sony slim slot load dvd(another laptop part)
GTX 650 ti (N650ti PE 1GD5/OC)

As you see, its quite power friendly. under 40 watts idle, 90 watts folding @ home on the gpu alone and about 150(lower most of the time) gaming(but its mostly a everyday/media pc).

Your system is very efficient!

So by default the card should have the same consumption as the non-PowerEdition? (which nvidia says is ok to run on a 400W 12v@20A PSU)
I was also wondering if I could use afterburner to undervolt the card. I guess not

Thank you very very much nukemaster.

You may find this of use.

I actually picked my card up because my 5770 was a bit loud at load and my passive 4350 was just able to push media center(the video was fine, the interface was actually slow). Also, check out the bluray/video playback wattage.

This thing runs very quiet and even with a slight fan speed increase to the fan speed in afterburner, you can get some good temps at low noise when gaming.

I get my power readings from my ups. I have seem some above 150, but it does not last long. This is also on the AC side, so the actual DC the power supply is pushing is lower.
