Hi All,

I want to purchase a wifi router. My requirement is, it should be operatable i.e. range should be around 100-150mts. In this range i should be able to use my wi-fi network..

Weather is should go for 150mbps router or 300mbps router. I don't want deadly speeds, but good range is needed...so which router i should purchase as per my requirement??

TP-link routers seems economical...shall i prefer 300mbps one??

Thanks in advance...

Range is not decided on speed. It has nothing to with it. Speed is based on mode in which Wlan operates. Range is basically defined by strength of signal. So 2dBi antenna on 300Mbs<5dBi antenna on 54Mbs router. You need to look for 5dBi omni antenna on router or even aftermarket directional antenna. If you go for 100 meters indoors than you'll need something at 12-14dBi to work like charm.

So...shall i say that the following serves my purpose....
1. Wi-Fi router
http://www.tp-link.in/products/details/?categoryid=241&model=TL-WR740N

AND
2. A biquad antenna...say the following
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-4GHz-20dBi-Yagi-802-11b-g-WiFi-Antenna-RP-SMA-WLAN-/330818660256?pt=UK_Computing_Boosters_Extenders_Antennas&hash=item4d065427a0

or I should prefer the following router..
http://www.tp-link.in/products/details/?categoryid=238&model=TL-WR841ND

or any other configuration.??

To my knowledge and with your valuable inputs...i believe 150Mbps router is good enough...

Also can someone explain what exactly is reception sensitivity in the below link..

Many thanks folks...thanks for your replies and thanks for sparing your valuable time...

either of those routers should be fine

the second one if its in your price range

and with the external antenna the idea is to put it on the pc/laptop receiving the signal--not on the router

though it may also work that way--never tried it that way round as my router cant take external antenna

so you need an adapter that allows connecting an external antenna on the receiving pc/laptop

the yagi is more directional than a biquad so needs to aim more at the router

and the one i linked has a tiny length of coax 20cm--you can get them with longer lengths to allow positioning

of the antenna

ie 1m or 3m etc

Just be aware most antenna solution like this are designed for outside or clear line of site application...ie a big warehouse.

Directional antenna indoors may or may not help. Walls are quite good at absorbing wireless signal. Many times the signal you get indoors do not follow direct paths and are reflected. This means you sometime may get worse reception with directional antenna.

You are way beyond the recommended indoor limits so there may not be any solution that works. You will see many post on this forum where people cannot not even get signal to go even 20-30ft much less 150m.

i am using a home made biquad on an alfa usb adaptor

this is a victorian building with very thick brick walls

no issues getting a signal from my router--5 bars

and can pick up the bt openzone in a hotel over 300 feet away and the hotel isnt even in line of sight

in the same position my laptop wireless can only get 2 to 3 bars from my router

and can only see in total 7 wireless networks all with a poor signal

my biquad pointing in one direction can pick up 68 networks most with good to excellent strength

and about another 30 networks if i turn the biquad around

All this with the Do it yourself (DIY) antennas?? the ones which you provided above??

That's too tempting...if so ...i also would like to make one myself...

shall i have some clear pictures of yours??

yes using the biquad connected to an alfa usb adapter
