Bioshock Infinite Framerate Hiccups (7950)

Hey guys,

I'm currently running an HD 7950 on an i5-3570k-based PC (no overclock with either). I've noticed that on Ultra settings, Bioshock Infinite occasionally suffers from framrate drops. To my knowledge, my driver is the up to date (Catalyst version 13.3).

Is this normal? I feel as though I should be able to run it at the highest settings without sacrificing performance, but perhaps I'm too demanding of my setup.

I don't own Bioshock but i found this on a forum "Try this. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\BioShock Infinite\Engine\Config. Open BaseEngine. Find PoolSize and change the value to 512 or 1024 (Depending on how much Vram your card has). I run a GTX 660ti so im using 1024. Next search for MinSmoothedFrameRate and change it to 62. Right below that is MaxSmoothedFrameRate, change it to 122. Close and save changes. These tweaks gave me a massive performance boost and eliminated hiccups."

Thanks for that! My Google-Fu is usually pretty strong, but I couldn't seem to find much. I'll try this out when I get home, but if it doesn't help, it looks like it might not be a problem on my end. I'm semi-new to the PC gaming theme...is it common for developers to release a patch that fixes major performance issues this soon after release?

Yea i don't think it's you. Have you tried to check if other persons have this problem right now?

Yeah, apparently a TON of people are having the same problems. I did a bit more tweaking and it seems to be a lot better, but still not as perfectly smooth as I'd expect. The problem is with V-Sync. The built-in benchmarking tool has me at 70 FPS average on Ultra settings, but it disables V-Sync by default, so it's not an accurate benchmark.

I got the same results on the bench mark, 70 average, 30 minimum, and 200 max. It's really the minimum that counts a lot, because that is when you notice it. I OC'd my 7950 just a little, and I got 80 average, with a 42 minimum fps. I have encountered some low FPS, but only VERY rarely. After I OC'd my card, the problem went away for good. On my second play through now.
