Shaving my heatsync. Bad idea?

So, I have a Temjin 08, and a big Noctuna nh-d14, and when I look at my pci 3.0 slot, it looks like my video card is going to just barely rest on my heatsync, I don't know if a cover on the video card would work, but I have been reading some solutions that suggest shaving the heatsync down with a file. I don't want to buy a new heat sync, I like how cool mine runs and how quiet it is, but I want to use my pci 3.0 slot. Is this a viable option? Anyone have experience with this?

I had a similar issue. I have a Biostar TZ77XE3 and a Noctua NH-D14. I didn't realize I would have an issue until I went to put my gpu into the top slot. There was no way it would fit unless the NH-D14 were to be modified.

In the end, I bought a new mobo that would fit it no problem and began turning the biostar mobo into an htpc.

Regarding loss of cooling capacity, shaving off a little bit will not affect it noticeably. Attaching the fans becomes a bigger issue depending on how much you need to lose. You may need to look at alternative mounting methods if you shave down all the way to where the clips hook up normally. That said, if you're shaving off close to a half inch, perhaps a different cooler or mobo would be a better idea.

Although I do not have experience with this, I do know that the heatsink potion of the d14 is massive, I would think that it wouldn't affect heat dissipation to file it down a little on a portion depending on how much material you have to remove, but those are just my thoughts.
