I just put a new machine together, and this is the last thing that I just can't figure out.

I'm using a regular old headset that has a pink mic jack and orange headphone jack, and when I plug in the microphone line of the headset, it will simply not pick up any audio whatsoever. The audio out works fine. I've tried messing with all of the usual microphone settings: volume, default recording device, etc., and there's no mute on the mic itself. The Realtek HD Audio Manager will always detect when I plug the headset in to the mic jack. But it's still not picking anything up.

I discovered yesterday that the line in jack works fine - when a powered device (like my iPhone playing music) is plugged in with a standard 3.5mm stereo cable. I decided to try it in the mic jack as well, and it worked. The mic jack on both the front and rear panels picks up a signal when my iPhone is plugged in. As in, I turn on listen mode and can hear the iPhone's audio. But I still get nothing from either with my microphone. I've tested the mic/headset with my old computer, and it picks up audio and sounds great.

What gives? What can I do to get this headset to work with my onboard audio?
I'm running the latest drivers, and have tried the original CD drivers, and with regular baseline Windows 7 drivers as well. Here's the build, for good measure:

    Core i7-3770 K
    Asus Sabertooth Z77
    2xGTX 680s
    Corsair Vengeance 32GB DDR3 1866 MHz
    Corsair AX850 PSU

Also, I posted about this issue a few days ago, but this was before I discovered the mic jack was picking up a signal from other powered devices.

Enable gain boost. most mic aren't boosted so they only deliver small audio but the iphone output is boosted, that's why you hear it...

Right click on the sound icon, recording peripherals, select your mic and right click properties, then in the personalize, check Mic gain/AMP and apply

Unfortunately, I'm not hearing anything with boost on. I can turn it all the way up to +30 dB, but I just hear electronic noise with the mic in.

do you have an in-line mute ?? maybe it's turned on... also try in the line-in port if that work or not...
