so im looking at monitors and have come across sum saying it has nvidia 3d built in like the asus monitors... do i have to have an nvidia card in order to use it or can i have an amd card and use the nvidia 3d glasses and play games and watch movies in 3d?

Solution
Nvidia's 3D vision requires a Nvidia video card that has 3D vision support. It will NOT work on an AMD card. I do believe you can use the monitor as a 120Hz monitor without 3D.
If you really want to do 3D, I'd recommend getting a 3D Vision monitor, sell your AMD card and get an Nvidia card. Nvidia has much better support in 3D. Not so much from Nvidia itself, but from the community. Though Nvidia's support is still better, than AMD, just not by much. However, through a mod community, many games are fixed to work flawless in 3D, where as you are alone with AMD.

Since you typically use a monitor much longer than a video card, it makes more sense to go down the route of your monitor.

Here is one mod community I know of that makes so many good games great in 3D that otherwise would suck. http://helixmod.wikispot.org/gamelist

i actually have an nvidia card lol but im going to be upgrading and getting a new monitor... can u recommend me a nvidia card that is comparable to the 7850 in performance and TDP?

A 660 or 660ti. Though be warned, 3D requires nearly double the power for the same FPS. Though 3D looks great, even with lower settings.
