Power supply causing crashes?

Ok so I recently purchased one of these pre-built gaming PC's. It is far from top of the line. AMD fx-6100, nvidia gtx 550ti 2gb, and 8gb of ram. Now I play games like wow and modern warfare 3 and I have never had a problem however when I play newer games like bioshock infinite or even fable 3, (the games run great on high/max settings) about 15-30 minutes in my pc crashes. I have ran a program called speedfan to monitor my temps. My Idol temps are 30c for my CPU and 30c for my GPU. When I run these newer games my CPU tops out around 48-53c and my GPU gets up to 70-75c... however my pc will suddenly crash then when it boots back up it tells me that "AMD has detected a power supply surge and has shut off for your protection" something along those lines. So I am thinking my power supply is the problem. I notice that a gtx 550ti needs a 400w power supply. My power supply is something called LOGISYS and it says "average voltage output: 330w, Max Voltage output: 480w" I have a feeling this is a pretty crappy power supply and is hopefully causing this crashing? I do not know a lot about CPU and GPU temps or power supplies for that matter. When a computer overheats will it BSOD or will it just shut off? Mine just shuts down. Any help or recommendation would be great. Thanks all.

  1. Logisys makes a few 480w psus and they are all garbage, only delivering a max of 16a(192w) on the 12v rail. I dont even have to look up the actually manufacture to tell you thats a crappy power supply. Get one of these and replace that horrible thing before it turns the rest of your system into a smoking paperweight.

Wow thanks for the speedy responses all. I have noticed one thing.. Now I am a noob when it comes to power supplies so please be nice haha. I notice in this pictures that these power supplies all have fans on the top. My case does not have an opening for this fan... unless the psu mounts the other way? Again I'm sorry I have not put together A computer in quite some time.
  3. If your case has a top mounted PSU the fan on the PSU should face down not up.
