Between the entire family's devices (phones, tablets, laptops, bluray players, apple tv, pcs, psps, etc) I have about 25 devices on the wifi. I have a Netgear WGR614v6 and have always disabled (unchecked SSID broadcast) and have used the wireless access control via the card list. I just added the new Slingbox 500 to all of this (initially broadcasting the SSID and disabling access control so that I can easily add the Slingbox's mac address). Everything works fine if I leave it that way, or if I add the access control. But as soon as I try to disable SSID broadcast again, I cannot connect to the Slingbox. I was wondering if this is just true of this device? Does anyone know if the Slingbox requires SSID broadcasting? I was just finding it hard to believe since even Apple TV does not require it to be broadcast....

Solution
The 802.11 RFC requires that SSID be broadcast at all times. Devices that are in strict compliance with that RFC will not connect if it's not being broadcast. Turning off SSID broadcast does nothing to enhance security ( http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/28653/debunking-myths-is-hiding-your-wireless-ssid-really-more-secure/ ) <--- just for one
