Are both an Access Point and Router necessary?

First, let me describe my current configuration, as it is a bit more involved than most home wireless networks. My husband works from home and has internet connection coming into the home via DSL. The DSL then connects to a SonicWall firewall that gives him dedicated access to his company's network. I use one of the ports that is not dedicated to his company use for my own personal use. Connected to the SonicWall, i have a D Link router which is then connected to a Linksys access point. I can't remember why/how I ended up with both pieces of hardware.

Other details: I have recently replaced my ancient laptop with a Mac and also have a tablet, printer, and TV that also can/do connect to the wireless network; the hardware is upstairs and I generally am downstairs when accessing the wireless network; Signal strength is usually good in my living area but gets weaker and drops sometimes from my bedroom which is farther away.

I have determined that the access point has failed, as I am able to plug directly into the D Link and gain internet access. So, my questions are: Can i replace the access point and router with a single piece of hardware? Why would I need to keep that configuration? Recommendation for replacement hardware? Other details needed in order to offer help?
