This happened a few weeks ago, so please excuse me if I make any errors.

I wanted to have a dual boot system running Windows 7, my current OS, and also the latest version of Ubuntu. Everything went smoothly during installation. I was able to connect to my router, etc. and after a few minutes of setting up and customizing I decided to see how installing Ubuntu had affected the performance of Windows 7, speed-wise.

Everything checked out, nothing was blatantly wrong on Windows and my dual boot screen worked perfectly. (I should note that I installed Ubuntu alongside Windows using a live USB.)

Anyway, I start up Ubuntu and everything works great until I'm logged in - I notice that I am no longer connected to the internet. Seems understandable, I probably didn't click the option to automatically connect. I click the bar to connect to the internet, and I find that the option to browse for current networks is grayed out. The VPN access is still there, but everything else is grayed out. I did some research about this problem and tried various terminal commands, none of which seemed to work. I noticed that the word "dongle" came up frequently, but I ignored it because I wanted to figure out a way to connect without having to purchase extra hardware.

tl;dr I can't connect to any networks because the option is grayed out and nothing I do in terminal solves the problem. Everything works perfectly on Windows 7, no problems whatsoever. What could the problem be?

Thank you for your time and answers.
