Hi i know this may be an old question to an old problem but i cant seem to find an answer anywhere and asus technical support is like talking to an brick wall,i have recently purchased a sabertooth 990fx board second hand the previous owner had the amd fx 8120 cpu i want to install the amd fx 8350 cpu and need to update the bios, now i have brought the bios chip with the latest update 1604 for r 1.01 sabertooth, what i want to know is is it as simple as pulling the old bios chip out and pushing the new one in,im thinking it cant be that simple nothing ever is surely there is something else i have to do to prepare the board ..im a complete newbe by the way coming from console gaming to building my gaming pc im jumping the gun a bit because the motherboard is the only part i have brought so far but im really thorough when it comes to things like this so i need to know everything before i build it im buying it peice by peice with each pay check can someone please please help me an let me knw what i will have to do before i put the chip in it cant be as simple as pulling old chip with old bios out and sticking new chip with new updated bios in ...can it...??

Solution
1. The chip is located at the bottom of the board, between the brown (I think)and the gray PCIe slot (right under it), near the ITE module.
2. It's a 8 pin chip, the only one on socket. You can't miss it.
It looks like the chip in the video.
3.No, only one BIOS chip.
4. Really that simple, just swapping them like described above. Nothing else to do and nothing to worry. Just carefully remove the old chip and insert the new one. Then start the board.

Thanks alexoiu for your reply I really appreciate it, Sorry for not making my question more clear I know the process of how to change the bios chip like you described but what i am saying is .....Is it that simple??....Will the bios update be done as simple as that just like as if i had flashed it with a USB stick or a disc or over the internet will it be COMPLETELY done as simple as switching chips from old to new. Is there anything else i need to do before and after i remove old bios chip and insert the new bios chip with 1604 update and once I have done this will that be it, will it be done???. I have a couple of other questions if you don't mind answering them please....

1)can anyone show me a picture of the bios chip where it is located on the board i know where i think it is but i want to make double sure.

2)Is there more than one bios chip, is there a main and a backup.

3)If there is two bios chips which one do I replace?.. the main bios chip or the backup bios chip.

4)Is it really as simple as swapping the old bios chip with the new updated bios 1604 chip

Thanks in advance again
and Thanks to noidea_77 for replying to.

That is amazing you have no idea what a releaf that is to me i was having visions of me having to update using a usb stick and messing it up beyond repair i brought the chip just after i brought the mobo as it was only £8 so i figured it wouldn't hurt to buy it,so it looks like i made the right choice Thanks so much for you help im really gratefull to you...im a bit obsessive about things so i have bearly slept for two days trying to find out the answers but nobody really was understanding what i was asking (apart from you) im a bit rubbish at explaining myself.
Can i ask one more thing, if i show you my build can you recommend a psu for me ..This is my build/going to be my build:-

amd fx 8350 cpu £152
asus sabertooth990fx r1.01 (already brought so cant change for r 2.0)got it for £60
club3d hd (tahiti le)) 7870xt joker graphics card £160
liteon ihos bluray/dvd/cd player(no re-write) £25
asus dvd/dvd re-writer ect ect £18
kingston hyperx beast 8gb 1600mhz or 1800mhz (2x4gb)/or adata xpg 8gb 1600mhz £45-£50
kingston 120gb ssd/or adata sx 900 128gb ssd £80
seagate momentus xt hybrid hdd/semi ssd 500gb £50
coolermaster case usb 3.0 an about 5-7 fans £70
corsair h60 liquid cooler/or coolermaster 212 evo+ £54 for h2o cooler/£24 for 212 evo
psu £40-£50 (or if there is a cheaper good one plz tell me)
picture and sound wise i have this 7.1 sourond sound set up already.

Sony bravia 40inch kdl40ex403u lcd
Sony str-da2400es 7.1 channel A/V Receiver (has every input imaginable im sure it will work with pc using gpu hdmi or optical/coaxil inputs)
audio pro image 44 floor standers 8ohm 125watt per speaker/250watts rms each
boston soundware xs se 5.1 surround sound
boston soundware 8" downfireing subwoofer
all in all 7.1 surround sound
So which psu ?????the psu calculator suggested 450-480watts but i figure i need a 550- 600/700 watts 80+ bronze psu any ideas would be helpfull im currently thinking corsair builder cx600 i want to spend £50 at the most on the psu
if you have any changes that you would do to enhance the build please feel free to point anything out that will improve on it i may use used parts for things like psu dvd drive, but not cpu or gpu they will be new so will case and ram all prices i have put are for new items ,apart from the motherboard which i already have, obvously im on a budget or i would of been getting the radeon hd 7970 or gtx titan, but there is no way on earth i can afford them.

Once again thanks in advance alexoiu im so relieved about the bios chip... if you manage to reply again the thanks

No you see at the monment i only have the mobo thats it im just trying to get it ready for when i am ready to build the pc ..im a complete newbe so im trying to solve any problems before i get to them ...luckily this problem seems solved as i have the bios chip coming in the post should be here tomorrow and it seems its as simple as removing the old chip and replacing with the new one and thats that ...on to the next im just ordering my optical drive im unsure weather to get a cheap bluray/dvd/cd drive that doesn't re write or get a dvd drive that does they are both similar in price ,i figure im not going to be burning any cd's for a while so i dont really need re write function yet so i may as well get the lite on ihas bluray/dvd/cd player its only £25 and then get the dvd re writer later
Thanks alot for your replys

Now I see.
Actually, since you have the board, you can check the BIOS version (assuming that the former owner did not update it). On the board there's a barcode sticker. The last 4 digits stand for the BIOS version.
Again, since you've already ordered the chip, replacing it is easy.
Regarding the memory, I would go with a compatible 1600 Kingston kit (Hyper) http://www.kingston.com/en/memory/search?DeviceType=7&Mfr=ASU&Line=SABERTOOTH%20Motherboard&Model=71926
It doesn't mean that other kits would not work, even if not listed there, but I would choose from the listed kits.
Other options: GSkill, or Corsair.
Power supply: A 600W one, like the mentioned CX 600 I think that is enough.
I guess that you will not use Crossfire or overclock.
Not sure about the role of the A/V receiver and the audio systems listed there. How would you connect them?

Wow. I recon that in this area I'm an ignorant. OK, not only in this area.
Regarding OC-ing, I wouldn't do it. In my opinion, it's only a sport for enthusiasts. The gain in performance does not justify (in my opinion) the risk regarding shorting the components life.

ok well i think i may take your advice as im on a budget as it is so i dont really want to shorten the lifespan of my cpu plus im a newbe and i dont have as much money anymore im just building this pc week by week from pay check to pay cheque its going to take time to build, i think 4.0ghz is ok plus with boost switch on sabertooth maybe i will get lucky ...problem is i normally take things to the limit so i will be like an expert by the time im finished lol ill be over clocking everything and anything by the end of it lol ...i'll be over clocking my fridge freezer lol

I received the new bios chip with the 1604 bios on it for the r1.01 board, i didn't realize it would be made by the same company as the original I thought it would be like a generic chip but its got mxic logo on it with all the codes ect, ect, so that's a bonus,it was simple i just pulled out the old and plugged in the new no problems.

problem solved thanks.
