I just bought a new house and want to wire it for media and internet service.. Now here's the thing, I plan on installing cat5 cables throughout the house in each room with wall plate connections but that's not the question.. My question is, how can I get internet access and the NAS server to go through the same cable? Meaning I want one cable to connect to the server and also have internet connection. I want to be able to access my movies in the server and at the same time if i choose be able to access internet contents from hulu, netflix, youtube, and amazon. What components do i need? I also want the has server to be wireless so it can be accessed by my laptops and tablets. Maybe a diagram will help me out here. I don't have much experience with networking but very capable of following directions and studying.

First I would look into Cat6 cables instead of Cat5, Cat6 is actually better quality and has a higher data transfer rate than regular Cat5. Second if you're going to wire everything up then you'll need a switch and/or a patch panel before going to the router which will then go out to your ISP. With a router in place and set up with the right configuration before you hit your ISP then you don't need to worry about much else beyond plugging everything up.

The first picture tells you how it works in general: http://webpage.pace.edu/ms16182p/networking/router.html
As fmbailey said, all your cat6 cables should end in one room in a patch panel. The ehternet switch will be located next to it and short cat6 cables are going from the switch to every port on the patch panel. Concerning the wireless: most routers (the device to connect to the internet) have a wireless module today, so you plug it into the switch with a cable for your PCs and get wireless access to it with your tablets. But i think for the cat6 cabling, you will need help (and the tools) from a local electrician anyway. He should know how to wire all that together.

Thanks for the reply fmbailey. I have no problem using cat6 cables. So what you saying is all I need is the gigaswitch a good router, my nas server and and plug everything in assuming I have the router set up properly, I will have internet access and access to the NAS server through the single cable.
