Questionable Ethernet port or Windows 8?

Hello everyone, I'm new here and I didn't notice a introduction thread, so I'll say it now. My name is Greg. I have what I would say an above average understanding of PCs, but limited terminology and lacking expertise in a lot lol.

My problem is I'm not sure if Windows 8 is not detecting my modem because of compatibility issues or is there something wrong with my Ethernet adapter.

I am running Windows 8 on my new PC with a Gigabyte GA-78lmt-USB3 mobo, ethernet adapter is onboard. I have DSL internet with an older Westell 6100 modem. When I plug my ethernet cable into my port, it does not light up at all. The ethernet "light" on my modem just slowly blinks, but I still get "Ethernet cable unplugged" in troubleshoot. In the past when there is no PC connected to my modem or my PC is off, my modem's ethernet light does not blink at all, so I'm guessing there is a connection, but no connectivity.

I have a feeling this may be a driver problem with an older modem and Windows 8 (I knew I shouldn't have trusted skynet). Here is what I've done to help anyone's troubleshoot checklist:

  • Installed all LAN drivers for my motherboard
Installed all drivers from the Realtek PCIe Family controller for the adapter
Checked Device manager, the adapter is listed and enabled
Tried three different ethernet cables (same result)
Tested the port with other devices (Xbox 360, Printer, GPS) and the port lights up when cable connected
Uninstalled the adapter, left drivers and restarted, reinstalled adapter
Uninstalled adapter and drivers, restarted and reinstalled
Reset modem with both reset switch and power off methods
Checked modem's firmware and drivers (Drivers supported up to Vista)
    Tested Speed/Duplex settings

I'm pretty much stumped. I know the port works, I highly doubt it is failing/dying, but I have never had this happen. I'm thinking my modem isn't being detected because of Windows 8, but I'm not sure why it would do that. I could understand if it connected but no internet.

I also have an older desktop running Windows Vista and it connects to the modem and internet with no problem.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

*PS, my Westell modem has a USB port too. My older Vista PC can connect to this way also. When I tried my new PC via DSL modem by USB, it made the sound notification that something was connected but never brought up any devices.

You PC does not need any drivers for modem/router etc when it connect via ethernet. It talks over the ethernet port using ethernet protocols that everything understands. It really doesn't care what you plug it into. Now this is only at the very lowest levels...some pc you need to configure things like PPP or IP addresses but you are not getting that far.

If you were getting the yellow triangle thing then it could be a configuration or ip problem but when it actually says cable disconnected and you have a cable it is almost always the driver.

Windows 8 is a pain in the butt for this...especially the 64bit one. I would verify you have the correct drivers.

The vista support thing is related to attaching to the modem with USB

Hmmm didn't think about that. Ok, I know how to run route print would I just enter the ping address into a browser or a command prompt?

I'm also gonna follow Bill001g suggestion of trying to dig up more drivers.

I have similar problem. The ethernet port doesnt blink but when i connected my modem to other pc its port was blinking. So it means the modem works ok. Then i tried to connect an other modem to my pc and the port was blinking. So it means my port works too. I cant understand why my pc doesnt detect the first modem and the port doesnt blink.
