Slow internet; router problem?

It started about 2 days ago, (this is on my desktop) while browsing the web, it would sometimes take more than 20 seconds to load and it would says (sending request) at the bottom left of the browser. Sometimes when browsing, it would just go straight to the page where it says webpage cannot be displayed (or something like that which happens when the internet goes down). But this would only last about 5 seconds and then when I keep refreshing, the page would load back up. It is very unnoticeable when playing games/applications because even if the internet drops, it only drops for couple seconds which doesn't have a huge impact when I am in game. (It is most noticeable when browsing)

On my laptop, it occurs more often, the internet would just drop for couple of seconds, and the page would go to the (webpage cannot be displayed) every now and then. Sometimes if it doesn't go to the webpage cannot be displayed, it would take a bit longer to load the page (it would: sending request...) (it makes it seem like it's on the verge of going to the "webpage cannot be displayed" page.)

Not sure if it's the router (the router is over 5..or 6 years old but it was working fine 2 days ago!) The router is a Linksys WRT54GS V7

Any help will be appreciated.

I have tried resetting the router through the button in the back, re-plugging the power, and also restoring the factory settings, and this still happens.

I haven't tried DD-WRT yet, I'll try now.

-- It just happend again, I just tried going on dd-wrt website, and it connection timed out giving me the "browser cannot display" page and when I refresh, after 5 seconds, the website begins to appear but very disorganized (such as the images, the location of links etc, images wouldn't load until about 30 seconds later when it fully regains back the connection)

try different DNS addresses like OpenDNS or google DNS servers. might be just a DNS issue. Also try to relocate the router, corners or next to glass surfaces affect router's signal performance.
