Hi there-

I have 2 raid 0 arrays in my computer, one made of HDDs and the other of SSDs. These raids are formed by my motherboard (Asus P8Z77-V). The Raid controller is Intel Desktop Chipset SATA RAID.

I have a 3rd SSD as a system disk. I need to reinstall Windows 7 on that system disk. Will this disable or destroy my RAIDs? Is there anything I can do to mitigate any difficulties?

Obviously, I will be making a full backup before starting anything, but its around 6TB of data and I would just as preserve it in its original location.

Thanks,

Since neither one of your RAID arrays is your O/S drive then it's pretty simple; just disconnect all drives except your system disk.
After you've successfully reinstalled Windows then shut down and reconnect your RAID arrays.

Leave our BIOS settings the way they were originally. If the SATA port your system disk is connected to is in RAID mode your system disk will automatically default to AHCI mode since it is not part of an actual RAID array.

If your RAID arrays were configured using the BIOS setup then you need not worry about losing the RAID configuration because the RAID arrays are identified and configured during bootup before windows starts to load. They will exist even if Windows is not installed. Essentially, Windows just sees each RAID array as a single device. Just make sure that your Non-RAID windows disk is identified as your Primary boot disk in the BIOS configuration.

As already stated, it's usually a good idea to disconnect any drives that you are not intending to have windows installed onto before starting a fresh install of Windows. That makes it much easier to insure that windows is running off of the correct drive.
