Acer Aspire XP SP3 issue

Hi All :)

I have an Acer Aspire 1650 running Windows XP

The kids have used it for a while and they started complaining that it was not shutting down properly and the keyboard was being really slow to type on etc.

So, I played around with it for a while and made sure that the Accessibility settings were OFF for Sticky Keys and FilterKeys etc.

Confirmed that these were unchecked. Even went into the registry to set the settings from posts I had found on the web. Still taking 3 seconds or so to register a key stroke.

The other issue is that when you shut the thing down is has the following as Not Responding.

Explorer.exe
HiddenFaxWindow

Sometimes SystemTray

When I started the machine in Safemode all worked well and shut down correctly.

After playing about a bit, I decided to take the machine back to it's factory settings. Alt and F10 on startup and reinstalled the OS - XP SP2

Did that and all was working well, shutting down correctly and keyboard working well.

Then the Updates applied SP3 and now the exact same issues occur.

Back to cant type and on shutdown the same Explorer.exe and HiddenFaxWindow not responding.

What can I do?

This is a fresh install of the OS from the Acer procedure, and applying the SP3 that causes the issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Cheers

From that link Feldmarschall, I have checked the following

1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\
Memory Management
Double click the following DWORD value in the right hand pane of regedit:
ClearPageFileAtShutdown
Make sure the Hexadecimal value is 0

Yes it already is.

I am trying the Log off user, then Turn Off Computer.
Currently it has been about 10 minutes of an hour glass following clicking on the Turn Off Computer link.....

May have to hard reboot...

Reboot, then go to control panel, on the left panel, "Add/Remove Windows
Components", un-check Fax Services.

Hi Feldmarschall :)

Cheers for the reply. Will check out that link.

Done the Uncheck of fax services. And that issue does not come up on Shutdown now.

Still have the 2 other "Not responding" on shutdown.

And cannot use the keyboard as the Stickykeys etc is On even though this is not selected in Accessibility options etc.

Event viewer will log those.

Try to uninstall keyboard in device manager and reboot.

In Event Viewer / System there is one recent error

Service control manager
Even ID 7022
The System Event Notification service hung on starting

When I go to the Microsoft link it tells me to go and check in Services that the service is started and set to automatic.

When I go there, this is indeed the case - nothing to change.

Could this have anything to do with outdated Acer software not being compatible with Service Pack 3?
As this machine was taken back to factory settings yesterday and was working without issue.

Until SP3 was applied.

Then the issues started.

Hi Feldmarschall,

Following installing the Keyboard and restarting. It then finds the hardware, installs it and asks for a further reboot. Rebooted.

Nothing changed.

Still have to Hold a key for 2 seconds to get anything to type.

Starting the machine in Safemode and no issues at all. The keyboard and shut down issues only happen when starting normally.

Doing that now Feldmarschall :)

Thank you for your help - will let you know how it is after it has removed SP3

And then I suppose we have to search for an Acer patch prior to reinstalling SP3?

If you really need SP3 then go search, if there are none then don't install it. I have encountered only once that SP3 was needed and never again.

Arrrgh,
OK, Uninstalled SP3 and restarted.

But the issues remain. Still can't type and still Explorer.exe not responding on shutdown.

So, it was working fine before sp3. But on uninstalling SP3 things are no better.

Would it be a case of doing the factory reset, reinstalling the OS and starting from fresh again?

The only things I have installed following doing that the first time is Firefox, Security Essentials and the windows updates...

Factory reset. Install drivers, firefox and AVAST free. It's better than essentials. And you won'nt need any updates. :)
