PC Won't Post - PSU Tested - Question

Hi all,

My PC simply wouldn't start one day. No fans spinning, no reaction whatsoever upon hitting the power button. So I followed the process below:

1. Reset CMOS and replaced the battery.
2. Tested power switch and swapped for reset switch.
3. Bought PSU tester which, when tested with 24 pin and 4 pin mobo connectors shows the 5v rail running at 4.1v.

The interesting point, and basis for my question is - when the power connectors are plugged into the mobo I get no response at all when trying to power up. When I plug into the PSU tester the fan on the PSU spins up and, when all other connectors are in place at the time of testing the case fans also spin and led's on the case light up. This only happens when the 24 pin and 4 pin are connected to the PSU tester.

The PSU is a 650w thermaltake and has been in the PC for about 4 years - possibly longer.

My question - given the above is it worth buying a replacement PSU and seeing if the lower voltage on the 5v rail is the reason the PC won't post, or am I looking at a mainboard failure and thus the pleasure of a partial and expensive rebuild?

Help greatly appreciated on this I'm lost without my rig!

Sorry forgot to mention I did take the RAM Dimms out and reinserted them.

I bought the Thermaltake PSU as I have an SLI setup in the machine.

The part I don't understand is why the fans on case and PSU won't spin when plugged into the mobo but will when plugged into the PSU tester. The 4.1v result on 5v rail I am unsure of also - not sure if that would stop the PC posting.

Great thanks Rolli. Could this, in itself, be the reason for the PC not posting or anything happening upon power up?

Great thank you so much. I'll source a new PSU and see if that solves it. I really appreciate you taking the time to advise.
