BEST RAM FOR M5A97 R2.0 . Hi , i have just recently built my first AMD system and as i have this kingston hyper x predator ddr3 1866 , i can only seen to get it to run at 1600 mhz...it just keeps reverting back to 1333 mhz when i try and get it too run at the proper 1866 mhz. i am running the FX 8530 8 CORE cpu with an ASUS HD 7950 TOP OC . Can anyone help me as to why ?? Thanks for your time..

Hi Phillip,
I'm Jewel with Kingston Technical Support and would like to offer our assistance. Per ASUS's website, the M5A97 R2.0 supports up to DDR3 1333MHz stable with any processor and can support up to 2133MHz overclocking. Since processors have the memory controller built-in the issue could be the supported memory speeds of the CPU, after crashing most BIOS will revert to defaults for stability which is why it would revert to the 1333MHz default speed. Per AMD's wesite, the FX8350 supports up to 1866MHz speed with a special note "1866 supported with 1 DPC (DIMM per Channel) in single memory slot motherboard designs". This means that the two memory modules would need to be installed in slot A1 and A2 or B1 and B2 to support that speed, this would be 1 DPC configuration. Also the easiest way to set up the overclocking speed on the HyperX Memory would be to select the memory profiles in the BIOS, if your BIOS does not have this capability than the timings would have to be set manually. For the 1866MHz speed the recommended timings are 9-11-9 @ 1.65V. If you need any further assistance, please call us at 1-800-435-0640 (USA and Canada only) M - F 6am - 6pm PT and I or another available Technician will assist you. Please be sure to have the part in question on hand when you call.

Thank you for selecting Kingston as your upgrade partner.

Dear Jewel from kingstonhq , Thanks very much for you reply and the advice. Im so sorry for taking so long to actually reply...so please accept my apology !! Ok i have played around with this Ram / overclocking , etc and im still not achieving the full 1866mhz. I have tried everything you suggested and without playing around in the bios with voltage settings and other things..the best i can manage is a 1729mhz. There must be something wrong maybe with the memory controller in the cpu or something. On this motherboard there are 3 power settings in the bios..power saving...normal...and extreme or performance. If i select performance it immediately alters the ram to an odd size such as 1439mhz or something..then i can manage to to up it to the next odd setting which is 1729mhz..the next after that is 2000 or more. On another point it makes no difference which ram slots on the m/board...still nothing changes. I was maybe advised to try another m/board with say the 990 chipset..instead of the 970 which the M5A97 R2.0 has. Im sorry for being so green on all this as this is my first time doing a PC build. Im trying to learn as i go. Apart from this lil problem...my system is terrific. The AMD system with the fx 8350, Asus 7970 OC graphics..and even with this ram OC problem, it is bulletproof !! so stable...runs 7.9 on all except the ram .i just wished i knew more about how to fix this situation.. Anyway thanks again very much for all you advice and time... I still think Kingston products are terrific...!! As i live in Australia is a little expensive to call you guys in the states..!! Cheers phillip

Actually on your mobo you'll want A2 and B2 to get to the 1 DIMM per channel as your 2 different channels are A and B. If setting manually you'll set the timings as stated by Kingstonhq, 1.65....and will also want to ensure CR (command rate, command timing) is at 2T or 2N and not 1T or 1N, and in addition will want to raise the CPU/NB Voltage + 0.10 from current setting.....people don't understand the whole 1866 thing is marketing hype by AMD, in their own Bios and Kernel guide it describes the FX CPU's as native 1333, and the bit with 1866 is there at 1 DIMM per channel WITH 4 GB STICKS, not 8GB, back with Dulldozer they were simply claiming 1866 to look better than INtel...sad part is they are still limited to 1866 when Intel was running 2133 long before DullDozer and now currently can run up to 3000
